OUR MISSION
Though the core of our work is still in education, our mission has evolved to empowering individuals, families, and communities by providing resources and enriching educational opportunities that foster self-sufficiency, improve quality of life, and promote community development.
OUR ORGANIZATION NOW FOCUSES IN THE FOLLOWING CRITICAL AREAS
- Education: Longitudinal Scholarships (Ages 6 and Up)
- Women Empowerment: Promoting Self-Sufficiency
- Workforce Development: Training Grants and Apprenticeship Support
- Street Feeding: Feeding homeless mentally challenged individuals in Freetown, Sierra Leone in partnership with Social Workers Sierra Leone
- Long-Term Disaster Recovery: Sustainable micro-enterprise grants (Survivors)
- Community Empowerment: Supporting community farming, poultry, and bakery.
- Mental Health: Awareness; Enhancing Access to Services; Capacity Building
- Youth Empowerment [vocational/ workforce development training for at-risk youth and adolescents]
WHERE WE WORK
Yawei has established its first home in Sierra Leone, a country located on the Western coast of Africa. With the national literacy rate at 43.3 % and more than 33% of school aged children being out of school due to lack of access to education, Sierra Leone ranked number 11 on the list of countries with the lowest literacy rate in the world. The estimated gross national income (GNI) is $340 per capita. This means that over 72% of the population is living in extreme poverty with less than $1 per day. High poverty rates coupled with lack of access to education deeply affects the children and families we serve.
Though we are currently only operating In Sierra Leone, we aim to plant seeds of hope in other African countries to fulfill our vision of lifting children, families, and communities across Africa out of poverty through the power of education one student at a time.
